PRP

PSORIASIS

Introduction

PRP is one of the recent innovative treatments for Hair Loss. The inception of this treatment modality in the field of ‘Hair’ dates back to nearly a decade when it was being tried and tested across the world by leading scientists.

By now, it’s used has been scientifically established in male and female pattern baldness and is also being tried in alopecia areata, chronic telogen effluvium, and scarring alopecias. PRP, as the name suggests, is a blood component abundant in one of the blood cells i.e. platelets, as they are rich in certain growth factors vital for hair regrowth. This concoction of growth factors when injected into the roots of the hair follicles, tends to boost their growth and grants the complete potential of reversing the miniaturization in male and female pattern baldness. True PRP is definitely autologous i.e. derived from one’s own blood; hence it is free of any infectious or tolerability-related side-effects.

All PRP is not the same

The normal platelet concentration in our blood is an average of 2 lakh platelets/μl. Unfortunately, any platelet concentration above 2 lakhs is being referred to as PRP, which is potentially dissimilar and rather portends an overgeneralization of the term. Scientifically, the working definition of PRP is >1 million platelets/ μl in a 5ml volume of plasma. In the last few years, various manual, semiautomatic, and fully automated commercial systems have flooded the market, but each technique leads to different concentrations with dissimilar biology. There is scientific evidence to suggest that the content of growth factors hugely varies, depending on the method of preparation of PRP.

Here, at Sparsh Skin Clinic, our expertise in PRP has been in use for the last 5 years. We are using the Smart PReP ™ system (Harvest Technologies Corporation, Munich, Germany). It is a highly specialized automated kit that utilizes the best quality standards to prepare the “ideal” concentration of platelets. It has a ‘no-touch technique’ to prepare PRP, which makes it absolutely safe to use.

An ideal candidate is a hair loss patient, who is compliant to medical treatment and seeking faster recovery of lost hair. The Dermatologist/ Trichologist will review your scalp clinically and with Trichoscopy to gauge when your scalp is ‘ready for PRP’. The patient must be free of anti-platelet drugs like aspirin or other pain-killers, for at least 1 week prior to the procedure. In a standard regimen at Sparsh Skin Clinic, we offer a combination treatment of PRP with scalp Nanopore. Treatment response is checked with global photographs as well as objectively compared from baseline with the help of Trichoscan, generally after a period of 6 months.
