Must Know Facts About LHR!

  • LHR is laser hair REDUCTION and NOT REMOVAL- This means that after the laser hair gets reduced in number and become thin rather than completely disappearing.
  • It is usually done after 15 years of age and when the patient has no active infection at the site. This is not done in pregnant and lactating females.
  • Patient should stop threading, waxing, and bleaching for the time prescribed by the physician before starting the treatment because the laser targets the pigment in the hair roots which is destroyed by these procedures. Shaving of the area is allowed before starting the procedure and in between the sittings.
  • LHR is avoided in tanned skin, so frequent use of sunscreens should be done prior to the procedure.
  • It is important to rule out any underlying hormonal abnormalities in case of hirsutism, otherwise the results attained would be incomplete or temporary. The patient should make sure to discuss their medical and gynecological history with the treating physician.
  • LHR is achieved through multiple sittings which are placed 4-8 weeks apart depending on patient profile, the site being treated, and regrowth after each session. This is because hair is in different phases of growth at any point in time and laser will target only those hair which is in the growing phase. Even after finishing the said number of sittings, to maintain results, it is important to take maintenance sittings once in three or six months.

Procedure and Post Procedure

It is a very tolerable procedure not requiring any kind of anaesthesia. The duration of the procedure depends on the area to be treated but it can easily be performed as a ‘lunchtime procedure’ and patients are free to join back work post-procedure.

Face should be cleaned properly before the procedure and all make up removed, Hair in the treatment area is shaved off using a razor.

Different laser systems are used for LHR. At Kubba Skin Clinic we have long-pulsed Nd Yag laser (Revlite, USA) and Diode laser (Light Sheer, USA), both are FDA approved, both are best in the respective category, and both are time tested.

During the procedure, cooling gel is applied on the skin if using a diode laser, or cool air is sprayed along with laser shots in case of long-pulsed NdYag. This, apart from giving comfort to the patient, has a scientific rationale of targeting laser to the hair follicles rather than skin and thus avoiding side effects.

During the procedure, the patient experiences a slight burning sensation and heat on the skin.

Immediately post-procedure there is usually some redness and swelling of the treated area which subsides in a day or two. Patients might experience some pain and burning sensation post-procedure for which mild pain killers may be taken. Rarely patients might develop a mild crust or a blister at the treated site 1-3 days after the procedure or pigmentary changes after a few days. The treating physician should be contacted for the same. All these side effects are temporary and transient and do not last long.

Patients should use sunscreen and strict sun protection post procedures and check with the physician about the continuation of other skincare products to be or not be used.

LHR has become a very commonly performed procedure done not only by qualified doctors but by technicians, parlor people, and quacks. It is important to understand that this is a very scientific procedure and results and side effects would vary greatly according to the treating person. Hence, it should be undertaken by a well-qualified dermatologist and with the best possible machines rather than getting lured by cheap packages available around.
